Philadelphia Police Department Prepares For Their Social Media Campaign During DNC

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Social Media at the DNC in Philadelphia will be bigger than ever, and first-responders are getting their plans together for many social platforms.  Sgt. Eric Gripp is the man behind of the Philadelphia Police Department's social media efforts, he says he plans to continue to be active and visible.

"I plan on being out on the street, I plan on having three phones, twice as many batteries, so my Philadelphia public school education tells me that's six. That should get me going and a lot of water."

He says their social media strategy for the DNC isn't going to be any different than what they do for any other event. But he is working with other city officials.

"All of us in the city that run these social media accounts, we've been meeting regularly to make sure that we have a unified message so the police department isn't telling you to do one thing and the fire department telling you something else and the government a third thing," Gripp said. "We're trying to make sure all the information that comes out, it gets out quickly but also its accurate."

Gripp is best known for his meme-filled posts that mix humor and pop culture, but he is keeping his lips sealed on what he has planned for the convention.

"This is a challenging situation, while its a big event for the city, it is also one political party's convention," he said. "I certainly don't want to come across as insensitive or as if I'm favoring, when I say I, I mean the department is favoring one political party over another, so we'll see what happens, but I hope to have some fun with it."

The Philadelphia Police Department is active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. During the convention they will post updates with the hashtag #PHLDNC.
