3-Day Excessive Heat Warning Issued For Greater Phila. Region

By Katie Fehlinger

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's a scorching forecast for the Delaware Valley going into the coming weekend, with the thermometer set to soar into the mid 90's for multiple days.

The Eyewitness Weather Team is forecasting a heat wave of 90+ degree heat starting Wednesday afternoon and lasting through Saturday. At peak hours during the next few afternoons, heat indices will spike near or above 100 degrees.

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Friday for the I-95 corridor and adjacent counties from New Castle County, DE right up to Mercer County, NJ. In addition, air quality is less than ideal for sensitive groups (elderly, children, those with respiratory illness), so it's all the more important to take it easy if you fall into that category.

One saving grace from Mother Nature: a few disturbances will help trigger scattered showers and storms Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Not everyone gets hit however, so those communities lucky enough to see a little rain move through will at least get a chance to cool off, albeit briefly.

In the meantime, try to plan around the heat if you must be outside. The most oppressive conditions fall between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so knock out that jog early in the day or wait to mow the lawn until closer to dusk. Stick to loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and stay hydrated with plenty of water.
