Taste Test Program Encourages Kids To Play With Their Food

by Suzanne Monaghan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The University City Science Center is holding a program this summer where kids are encouraged to play with their food.

A group of middle-schoolers from Sunrise of Philadelphia will participate in the Taste Test program this summer which explores the science of taste.

"It is not a cooking program. It is really exploring what makes you enjoy something, what makes you hate something, and the elements you can change," explained Program Manager Danielle Stollak

She says this also includes texture, temperature, and smell.

"If you take a potato chip and you moisten it and you lose that crunch how does it taste different to you? If you're eating a piece of bread and you start smelling broccoli or peanut butter. Does it taste like you're actually eating peanut butter on bread or broccoli on bread?" she said.

These junior scientists will get a true lab experience, complete with lab coats and notebooks.
