8-Year-Old Girl Turning Heads In The Boxing Ring

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- At 8-years-young Brierah Mathis of Camden is used to standing out.

"They say I'm the fastest," Bre told Eyewitness News Friday.

Mathis was the youngest and only girl in her boxing camp that just wrapped up at Ridiculously Fitt Gym in Philadelphia's East Falls section. Her instructor Derrick Felder says Bre was also the best boxer in the camp.

"At first they thought she was just a regular girly, girly kid," Felder said, adding that soon "they all knew that Bre was going to be head of the pack. Like we got to keep up with Bre."

Felder credits her success, which has also won her an award, with being fast, strong and passionate about the sport.

Felder, who has been boxing most of his life and working with young athletes for eight years, calls Bre a stand-out athlete.

"I don't run across girls with that much passion, that much athleticism, that drive to work hard. A little older maybe, but not 8 years old so, she's definitely one of a kind" Felder said.

Bre has boxed previous to this boxing camp and her parents say they plan on keeping her in the sport as long as she loves it.

"We got something special," Felder said.

Bre's signed up for private lessons through the summer.
