PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Zika virus continues to spread throughout South America and the Caribbean. There is a clear expectation that local transmission could happen here in the U.S. this summer.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes the clear issue and according to a report in the journal Jama Pediatrics, it will take an all-hands-on-deck effort from different specialties to treat the virus in their patients. The concern is that both microcephaly and another complication called fetal brain disruption sequence are of concern.
The worry is that even babies born to Zika mothers who don't have obvious microcephaly will have other neurological issues of concern.
