Artists Show Off Their Work At The Manayunk Arts Festival

by Kristen Johanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Thousands came out to support local and regional artists for the Annual Manayunk Arts Festival.

"It can tend to get slower in the summer, so it's nice to have a show that the community supports," says Sola, who is one of the many artists showcasing her unique designs. "It's a great show. Philly: they are loyal about their teams, and they are loyal about coming back to shop with me, and I like that."

Sola owns Scarvelous.com and drove up from Maryland, to sell colorful, hand-crafted clutches, hats and coin bags.

"I have recently started to make pouches out of the African wax-print fabrics, because they are really popular right now," she said.

White tents lined Main Street, with sculptures, paintings, photographs and jewelry on display.

"This is kind of my hobby, I get to get out of the office, and meet people and have a lot of fun," said Tom Burcher with Shadowcat Jewelry in Mount Laurel, NJ. "The pieces I do are sterling silver with semi-precious gem stones."

"The jewelry is really really pretty," said Emily, who made a visit to the festival for the first time.

She was among dozens watching Richard Aldorasi making colorful Turkish marbled scarves.
"I am trying to see this guy's scarf come out finally," she said.

"It is the only art form where you actually float paint on water, so we create a floating pattern, and then we print it on silk," said Aldorasi.

"This is our second year, it's really a great place to come. So many new things they have this year," said Jane, with her husband Tom, from Allentown.

But for Tom, "I just follow her, really, I don't see a whole lot of anything, I just go where she goes."

Aldorasi says, he'll be back.

"I mean, it's just great. Philadelphia is a real melting pot, and it's been a real pleasure coming here and sharing this with Philadelphians," he said.
