TTF Bills Introduced In NJ Legislature

by KYW's David Madden

(TRENTON, NJ) Bills aimed at replenishing New Jersey's Transportation Trust Fund have been formally introduced in the state Senate and Assembly, with proponents confident they can get the package through by the end of the month.

The fund goes dry June 30th, and not everyone shares the optimism of Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald that the package, which includes a 23 cent a gallon hike in the gas tax paired with other tax cuts, can get to Governor Chris Christie in time.

"It's a bipartisan effort with geographical support from around the state," Greenwald told KYW Newsradio, "and it's really about creating what I consider to be tax competitiveness."

He reminds people that, even at the higher rate, New Jersey's gas tax would be lower than those in Pennsylvania and New York . Assuming the plan is approved in the legislature, Christie has expressed his own reservations about it. Greenwald hopes to garner veto-proof majorities while suggesting they're still working with the Governor's staff.
