Toomey On Need For New Restrictions On Guns: "It's Time To Get Something Done"

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Senate Democrats are refusing to give up the floor they're filibustering to draw attention to what they say is the need for new restrictions on guns after the massacre in Orlando.

The current debate centers around how to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists.

"So there's an obvious opportunity here, guys, to work together and find the solution," said Senator Pat Toomey. "This is not rocket science to figure this out."

Toomey says there is room for compromise on legislation that would prevent people on a terror watch list from buying guns.

"I think everybody ought to be in agreement in principle," the senator said. "We don't want terrorists to be able to walk into a gun store and buy a gun, and we don't want an innocent, law-abiding citizen to be denied his Second Amendment right because he's wrongly on a list with a bunch of terrorists."

Toomey says errors happen "all the time," so there must be some "meaningful mechanism" for a person to challenge his placement on the watch list.

"It's time to get something done on this" he said.

A measure he co-sponsored to expand background checks after the Sandy Hook massacre failed to pass the Senate. The group 'Everytown for Gun Safety' says it's working with Toomey to come up with a bill palatable to both parties.

A measure to close what Democrats call the "terror gap" also failed in the Senate after the San Bernardino attack.
