CHOP Staff Teaches Potentially Life Saving Skills Right On The Sidewalk

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia hosted demonstrations at four locations throughout the region Saturday that could save lives one day.

Anthony Nicholson was one of several staff members showing people walking by what do to if you come across a choking victim.

"It's a basic setup, so we can actually show them how to do the compression, how many to do, and then what to look for," he tells KYW Newsradio. "Even how to revive a patient from choking."

He says if someone is giving the universal choking sign....

"You should be able to respond to that situation, and we're trying to teach the community how to respond to those events."

Megan Knott was glad she was pulled aside by staff members as she was walking by."I learned how to position our hands on the adult dummy, and press down to the tune of 'Staying Alive.' Also learned the Heimlich maneuver on adults and then CPR and choking on an infant mannequin as well."

As a mother of three, Knott says this was very beneficial.

"Nice to be able to practice something I always wanted to know how to do, but not ever felt comfortable doing myself. Now I at least feel comfortable getting started until help could arrive."

The emphasis was hands-only CPR, not mouth to mouth, and it was training, not certification.

This was done as part of National CPR and AED Awareness Week.
