'Stop Hunger' Food Drive Helps Kids Get Meals They Need On Summer Break
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- SEPTA and Philabundance workers and volunteers rallied against hunger at Dilworth Park, outside City Hall, aboard a "Stop Hunger at Your Station" food drive.
With school letting out for the summer, SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey Knueppel says thousands of children won't benefit from the free and reduced-cost meals they get while attending class.
"For children and families without sufficient food resources, summer can be a very challenging time," noted Knueppel.
"I know the struggle of getting food on the table, and making sure that my son has something to eat everyday," said Philabundance volunteer Sheri Howard of West Philadelphia who is a single mom with a ten-year old boy.
She shows him with actions, by bringing him to the food bank warehouse once a month.
The "Stop Hunger at Your Station" food drive will run June 6th through the 20th, at 43-designated stations. During the two-week food drive, the food items most needed include staples like canned tuna, canned fruits and vegetables, breakfast cereals, as well as jars of peanut butter and jelly

Last year, SEPTA riders and transit workers donated nearly 14,000 pounds of food for Philabundance and its member agencies.
