Beautiful Holiday Weekend Turns Ugly For Drivers Returning From Shore

HAMMONTON, N.J. (CBS) - Farley Service Plaza was full of many tan faces after a lovely Memorial Day Weekend down the shore, but some red ones too.

Red from anger and frustration caused by the ride home.

"Long, arduous, and tough," Joe Cahill described the drive.

He was heading back to South Philly after a weekend in Avalon.

"Getting out of Avalon took me about an hour," he tells KYW Newsradio. "Then getting on the Garden State Parkway took me about two-and-a-half hours just to get to Farley Plaza. I spent a good four hours in the car, I'm not very happy about it."

Joseph Bowes' luck wasn't much better. He was coming from Sea Isle City.

"Chaos," he says. "Just no order, nothing."

In fact, he called it some of the worst traffic he's ever seen:

"From 1-10 with ten being the worst it was probably an eight or nine."

Harvey Mishkin, coming from Wildwood with Chirs Cranage, agrees.

"Three hours and 40 minutes," he says. "I think it might be the worst (traffic) ever."

"It was a long time," adds Chris. "Just bumper to bumper, not moving."

But she says they tried to make the most of it:

"We had fun. We laughed and joked in the car, but I wouldn't want to do it again."

No surprise there. Backups on the Garden State Parkway northbound reached around 20 miles at one point.
