Engaged NJ Correction Officers Charged For Assaulting Inmate

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) -- The Mercer County Prosecutor's Officer announced charges, on Thursday, against two correction officers. Isaac Wood III and Trachell Syphax have been charged in connection to the assault of an inmate.

According to officials, on May 11, Wood III knocked an inmate to the floor by punching him in the face. Authorities say that Wood III, 40, then kicked the inmate in the head and to the body. Police say that their investigation shows that the inmate did not provoke Wood or resist him.

Syphax, 30, witnessed the assault and did not intervene, authorities say. The inmate was taken to the hospital for treatment and officials say that Wood III and Syphax both filed false police reports detailing the incident.

Officials say that Wood III and Syphax are engaged to one another. Both officers were suspended without pay due to the incident.
