TSA: Prepared Travelers Can Help Speed Up Airport Lines

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There's plenty of blame to go around for the recent security delays at the nation's airports.  But the TSA says there are things travelers can do to shorten the wait.

Air travelers in security lines have heard the instructions.

"Make sure everything is out of your pockets -- your cell phones, your keys..."

And yet..."beep!"-- there are things that slow down the line.

The TSA staged a media demonstration, showing 10 prepared travelers going through the line in a minute and 45-seconds.  But 10 who had a laptop still in its case, an over-sized water bottle, and a handgun took eight minutes.

"Determine what you can or cannot pack in your carry-on luggage before you get o the airport," said TSA spokesman Michael McCarthy. "It'll greatly speed up your personal screening experience and it cal help all of those passengers who are behind you in line."

McCarthy says the TSA is not blaming travelers for the lines -- he's just pointing out that they can help.
