Pair Arrested For Burglary After Police Find Suspect Hiding In A Closet

BERLIN, NJ. (CBS) -- Berlin Borough Police have announced the arrests of two individuals in connection to a burglary that occurred on May 20. The incident took place around 1:40 p.m. as officers responded to a home after receiving a call of a burglary in progress.

Authorities say that a 15-year-old teenager called from the basement of the house, while hiding, after the sound of glass breaking came from upstairs. That sound was accompanied by footsteps.

Police say that upon their arrival, they discovered a woman sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle, with the vehicle running. The driver was not in the vehicle. Officials say the woman admitted that she did not live in the development.

She was identified as Alexis Diamond of Blackwood, NJ.

Authorities discovered that the back door of the residence had been broken into. They entered and removed the child from the basement.

When they searched the upstairs, officers found a man hiding in a closet. He began to fight with police, according to officials. After the struggle, the man was taken into custody. He was identified as James Clerkin Jr. of Chesilhurst, NJ.

Diamond and Clerkin were both charged. Among the charges were burglary, conspiracy, obstruction and criminal mischief.
