PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — We’re heading into summer, and who doesn’t love a cool treat?
Students at Drexel University have been hard at work this semester, not just in the classroom, but in the lab creating some delicious concoctions! One of their inventions just won a contest and will be sold at Shake Shack in University City, and the best part is it helps out charity.
Drexel’s Food Lab and Shake Shack’s University City store have developed a Philly-inspired concrete that starts selling in July. A concrete is a frozen custard with mixed sweets and crunchy bits.
Eyewitness News got a behind the scenes sneak peek.
That’s where student Dana Bloom mixed and mashed the final three flavors, including her own “Banana Boat House Row.” The concoction is made of chocolate, bananas, peanut butter, jam, almond butter, and toasted marshmallows.
“I was looking for different flavor profiles, and different textures. You want to take the crispy, with the crunchy, and the smooth,” said Dana. “So that’s what I looked for.”
There’s also a treat called “The City of Butterly Love.” It’s a mash-up of caramel, vanilla, brown butter bits, and butter cake.
And, last but not least there’s the “Tahini Meeny Miney Mo” made with with bits of tahini, honey, and sesame brittle.
“We’ll run it for the entire month on the menu,” said Shake Shack general manager Ryan Hux. “You know, kind of a great way to show our partnership with Drexel, and offer something back to them.”
And to make the deal even sweeter, the winner also gets a chance to work with Shake Shack, and roll their recipe out in a commercial kitchen.
In the end it was Emily Lloyd’s “City of Butterly Love” flavor that took home the prize. One dollar of each “City of Butterly Love” will go to Drexel’s Food Lab, where students take a hands-on approach to solving real-world food industry issues.
The winning custard flavor will be available for a limited time, and is set to hit Shake Shack stores in July.
