Penny Nance: Women Are Not Monolithic

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Penny Nance, the CEO of Conservative Women for America, discussed her book, Feisty and Feminine, and how conservative women can more effectively express their viewpoints in social situations and online.

Nance, in an interview with Chris Stigall on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, said her book gives advice to women on how best to advocate for issues they are about.

"This is a book for women who are on playground, or in the classroom, or in church with someone who feels comfortable to denigrate their beliefs but doesn't really know what to say. But you also want to be able to face these people next week. So, I would suggest that social science and science and truth is on our side. You don't need to yell. There's all kinds of information and I come to this as a woman of faith. We need to be kind, and gracious and thoughtful."

She rejected the charge that all women share the same political views.

"The real resentment for me is that they try to pretend that we are monolithic. We're not. With any group of women, there is going to be disagreement regardless of your political ilk. I say that's healthy because that means you're thinking. Maybe we can learn from each other."

Nance also challenged the media narrative that women would vote for politicians just based on gender.

"Isn't it reductive just to consider the only reason someone gets your vote is because they're a woman. But everybody here voted for John McCain because of Sarah Palin? Raise your hand. That's not really how you think. You really only want women who fit a certain philosophical view, and by the way, so do I. Here's all these conservative women who are coming up through the ranks like Vicky Hartzler and Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who is number four in the House leadership in Congress and Joni Ernst, who's a Senator from Iowa. I'm supporting them and there are amazing conservative women, women of my philosophical views, women that are pro-life that I can support. You may not like them, but they're also women and if you really believe that, you should be supporting them."

She will be appearing with Chris Stigall at the next WPHT Speaker Series on May 4 at Neumann University. For tickets or more information, check out cbsphilly.com/speakerseries.
