PATCO Freedom Cards Could Be Used On SEPTA...Soon

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- PATCO riders will soon be able to use their prepaid fare cards on SEPTA, under an agreement approved by the PATCO board.

Approximately 800 riders a day now purchase transfers to continue their PATCO ride on the SEPTA system. SEPTA is slowly phasing in its Key card program starting with a partial rollout in mid-June. By the time it's fully operational next year, PATCO Freedom card users will be able to use their card to ride SEPTA.

PATCO GM John Rink tells KYW Newsradio there will be one condition.

"Our customers would have to register their Freedom card on the new system if they want to use that as payment on SEPTA's system," he said.

It comes down to computer programs. PATCO will change its to match the one SEPTA uses.

"The only thing our customers would have to do is contact our center," Rinks said, "or through the web and say 'I would like to register my card to be able to be read throughout SEPTA's system.'"

In time, it's hoped SEPTA's Key card will sync up with PATCO's. Rink sees this as a start to establish similar relationships with other carriers like New Jersey Transit.
