100 Days Away From DNC, Officials Confident City Will Be Ready

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia is just 100 days away.

Officials plan to celebrate that milestone Saturday, since they say they are satisfied with where the planning stands.

"We're feeling very good at this point and we're excited about the execution phase of the convention," says Host Committee Executive Director Kevin Washo.

He says the group is meeting its benchmarks. It's raised more than $40-million of the $85-million pledged, it's recruited more than 9,000 of the 10,000 volunteers it needs, and it's ahead of schedule on paying off a major expense -- rental on the Wells Fargo Center.

"Our donors have been extremely receptive in terms of what Philly has to offer, and people are really excited about coming because of the history and the amenities we have," says Washo.

The police department has already received $50-million dollars in federal funding for convention security.

Police officials say it will pay for extra manpower, but it's also allowed them to buy new equipment, such as a fleet of bicycles, that it gets to keep when the convention is over.
