Habitat For Humanity Breaks Ground On New Community In North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The lives of at least a dozen families will be transformed by the end of the year when the first phase of homes is complete.
The folks at Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia broke ground Wednesday on a new community on Diamond Park at 16th and Fontain Streets in North Philadelphia.
"Twenty-one new, affordable houses that Habitat homeowners will be purchasing and living in, in the next little bit," said executive director Frank Monaghan. "This is the biggest project Habitat Philadelphia has done, but what's really exciting about it is that we are bringing affordable housing to North Philadelphia."
Carissa Williams was expected to be one of the first homeowners when the first block of new homes go up.
"I get overwhelmed just knowing that I get a fresh, new start on a new home, new neighborhood," Williams said.
She finished her 350 hours of community service and is expected to get a letter in the next couple of weeks matching her to this community.
"Saying you know, whether I want to 'yay' or 'nay' it, and I think I'm going with the 'yay,'" she said. "It's going to be challenging but I'm ready for the challenge. They taught me how to save and plan for emergencies. I think Habitat has really prepared me for being a great homeowner."
