Doctors Promote Safe Sex Following Zika Virus Outbreak
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control are urging men to practice safe sex if they've been travelling to areas where Zika virus is spreading.
The guidelines suggest men with symptoms use condoms for six months after visiting a Zika infected areas, such as South or Central America and eight weeks if they are asymptomatic. Dr. Stacey Gorski, assistant professor of biological sciences at the University of the Sciences, agrees it makes sense.
"Why take the chance if you don't have to travel better that you don't, and with these guidelines from the cdc with the safe sex practices, you want to be safe especially if you want to get pregnant," she says.
The mosquito-borne virus has been associated with severe birth defects and miscarriages, virus symptoms include flu like ailments, joint pain, red eyes and rash.
