Pennsylvania Educators Discuss Ways To Address On Campus Sexual Violence

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Governor Tom Wolf's initiative to encourage schools and universities to address campus sexual violence was the focus of a round-table discussion Thursday at Bucks County Community College.

Representatives from some two-dozen colleges and K-12 schools kicked around a number of ideas, and shared some of the current research designed to encourage victims of sexual abuse to step forward.

At Temple University, Dr. Valerie Harrison says they've seen some early success with a new anonymous complaint program and something called medical amnesty.

"You would not be charged, for example, with a violation of a student code for alcohol and drug use if it's in conjunction with reporting sexual misconduct," said Dr. Harrison.

Some schools are pushing a proposal to educate students about the definition of consent at an earlier level so they have a clear understanding upon entering college.
