Conservative Columnist: Trump is 'Embarrassing'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Conservative columnist and political commentator Jonah Goldberg discussed why he can't support Donald Trump for President, calling him embarrassing and accusing him of stereotyping Republican voters.

Goldberg, who writes for National Review, said in an interview with Chris Stigall on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT that Trump doesn't even know what it means to be a conservative.

"I've simply found the guy to be embarrassing for a very long time. The problem is that he, look I was absolutely wrong about his chances and all that, but my core prediction about why I thought he would fail...is that this guy is not a conservative and he does not know how to speak the language of conservatism."

He cited Trump's refusal to disavow an endorsement from the KKK earlier this year as an example of him fundamentally misunderstanding who his supporters are.

"His frames of reference are what liberals say about conservatives. He plays off of that and plays the caricature of what he thinks conservatives are supposed to think. I never thought he was some sort of hood wearing klansman. It's not like I think the pillow cases at Mar-A-Lago come with the eye holes cut out in advance. But, that thing with the Klan, the problem with that wasn't that he was unwilling to denounce the Klan because he doesn't like the Klan. I'm sure he doesn't like the Klan. The reason why he wasn't willing to denounce the Klan was that he thinks a lot of his supporters like the Klan and he wasn't willing to do it because he's so ignorant of what the conservative movement is about that he thinks there's a sizable portion of klansman out there. It's so fraught with peril when you think about him actually trying to get into the White House."

Goldberg also criticized Trump for refusing to learn about the major issues concerning the country to the political party he hopes to lead.

"He just doesn't care. He won't do the homework. He's been winging this thing from the beginning and because people find it charming, they're willing to overlook it and it drives me crazy."
