Weekend Box Office Report: 'Batman v Superman' Fights Its Way To The Top

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Batman and Superman versus Zootopia may not be a fair fight, but the caped superheroes sure won it on Easter weekend.

The comic book-inspired, action-adventure fantasy, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, bumped the animated comedy, Zootopia, out of the top spot after three straight weekends in first place by setting the record for an opening weekend in March by earning an estimated $170-million on its debut.

As the runner-up, Zootopia added an additional $23-million to its cumulative take, now over $240-million.

Third place was claimed by the new comedy sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, with Nia Vardalos. It took in a respectable $18-million.

No other title cracked the $10-million mark.

Overall, Batman v Superman was the reason that industry-wide totals left those of last weekend and last year's counterpart weekend in the dust.
