PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Thousands of Phillies fans gathered at Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia Saturday morning for a kick-off race to the upcoming baseball season.
Phillies Charities 5K race director Maryann Moyer says this was the 6th annual Phillies season kick-off race.
“The home opener is April 11th and this is really considered our big event in Philadelphia to kick things off,” she said. “The best thing about it is getting 6,000 people out here to run three miles. So as a runner, it’s great. And they love baseball and it just blends together and it’s just a great event!”
Many who participated dressed up in their Phillies gear.
“There were a lot of Phanatic hats. That’s our favorite,” said one runner. “I saw a lady with red, white and blue hair and a tutu.”
Moyer says proceeds from this race go to the Phillies Charities Grand Fund.
“In December, at the end of the year, events like this one, all the money is distributed in the community to nonprofits throughout the Delaware Valley,” she said. “Last year, through the Phillies Grand Fund, we donated $2 million in grants throughout the community.”
