Women's Conference In South Jersey Centers On Empowerment

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - A daylong conference on the Rutgers Camden campus targeted the issue of empowering women.

The theme behind the session -- "Disrupting Power and Privilege" -- may sound a tad radical to some. Dr. Gail Caputo, head of the Women and Gender Studies Program, says it doesn't have to be, because it depends on the individual. And we're talking about more than shattering the ever present "glass ceiling" in the business world.

"It's a celebration of women's achievements to knowledge," Caputo told KYW Newsradio. "But I think more importantly, it's a coming together of like minded people who are interested in improving lives for girls and women and helping them succeed in leadership and other roles."

And getting to that goal, she says, can take a number of different routes:

"Some people are interested in civic action as a way to disrupt power and privilege. Some do it in the courtroom or in the classroom, or we can do it in our everyday relationships."

It comes down to individuals discovering where they want to be in society and how best to get there. And trading ideas and opinions in a forum like this is a good way to get started.

Some 200 people turned out for the session, the first ever organized by Rutgers-Camden. It coincided with Women's History Month.
