One Year Later, Friends Remember Local Woman Killed In Germanwings Plane Crash

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Next week will mark one year since a plane carrying 150 crashed into the French Alps. Just this week, investigators came out with new information that indicates the co-pilot responsible for the crash should have sought mental help, but didn't.

Investigators say co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked the pilot out of the cockpit and intentionally crashed the plane on March 24, 2015. Records later showed Lubitz had a history of severe depression and ignored a doctor's order to check into a psychiatric hospital.

Americans, Emily Selke, 22, and her mother Yvonne died in the crash. Emily was a Drexel University graduate and Yvonne was originally from the Philadelphia area. One year after the crash, Emily's close friends plan to honor her with a music festival

"You could just meet her and feel like you've known her your entire life," Julie Kimelman told Eyewitness News.

Ashley Kuhn knew Selke during their time at Drexel. They both bonded over music. She says Emily loved many different kinds of music.

"I'll be at places and I'll hear bands. All I have to do is hear a Modest Mouse song at Rite Aid and I'll start crying and just feel like she's right there with me," Kuhn said.

Kimelman and Kuhn are holding a music festival on Saturday at World Café Live in Emily's honor. They say proceeds will go into fund that will pay for a music student a Drexel to travel abroad.

"Emily would love that all of her friends are coming together from so many different aspects of her life," Kimelman told Eyewitness News.

Emily's friends hope to make the festival an annual one to help send many students overseas. For more information on the festival, click here.
