Local US Senator Urges Republican Colleagues To Allow Hearings, Vote On Supreme Court Justice

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Reports indicate President Obama could nominate a Supreme Court justice this week, and a local US Senator is urging his Republican colleagues to do their job and allow hearings and a vote on the nominee.

Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and was at the National Constitution Center to talk about the Supreme Court vacancy and Senate republicans who are blocking consideration of any nominee.

"My concern is that if we don't proceed to meet this new nominee, to hold hearings on this new nominee, and to vote on confirmation, this vacancy will continue. Not just this year, but after the election into next year."

Coons says this obstructionism is not good for the nation.

"If the Republicans continue with the disrespect inherent in refusing to even meet with the President's nominee, there might be other consequences for our ability to listen to each other and work together."

Coons says he hopes that citizens will express their concern about the stonewalling and force Republicans to move on the Supreme Court vacancy.
