Police Officer Shot, Killed In Maryland Grew Up Locally

LANDOVER, MD (CBS) - A police officer is dead after a shooting near a police station in Landover, Maryland, just outside Washington DC (read more).

The Prince George's County officer -- 28-year-old Jacai Colson -- grew up in Boothwyn, Delaware County.

He is a graduate of Chichester High School where he played football.

His old coach Joseph LaRose tells CBS 3 Eyewitness News that Colson was a leader on and off the field:

"He led this community, he led our team obviously. This is a sad day."

The Chester Upland School District released the following statement on Monday:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with [Officer Jacai Colson's] family at this time. We are circling in prayer with his family, friends, and Chichester football players at this time. Jacai was known for his presence, smile, and energy."

Officials are calling this an "unprovoked attack" on the station and Colson was killed during the shootout.

Police say two suspects are now in custody. One of them was wounded in the shootout.

There is no motive at this time.

Colson would have celebrated his 29th birthday this week.
