New Research May Detect Alzheimer's Risk Before It Happens

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- We are learning more about Alzheimer's and one thing that researchers have found is that cognitive decline in Alzheimer disease may take place 12 years, before the onset of clinical impairment, and 17 years before a diagnosis of dementia.

If you think about it, this can give us a head start in trying to predict who is at risk. The research, which is based on analyzing patients after the diagnosis, also added some interesting facts. For instance, education can add protection. A higher level of education appeared to offer a 3-year protective window against the onset of cognitive decline.

But there is a downside. Those with greater education experience a steeper decline once the diagnosis is made. It seems the more we learn about Alzheimer's, the greater the puzzle is.
