Colored Girls Museum Opens In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Black History Month is almost over and Women's History Month is just days away.

A Germantown museum is celebrating the lives of ordinary, yet extraordinary, black women and girls.

Behind a gate, just down a path stands a Germantown 3-story home. Inside, a collection -- a celebration of colored girls.

"You will find everything from a straightening comb to pottery to works of art to clothing...any number of really beautiful and interesting things," said Vashti Dubois, the founder of the Colored Girls Museum.

At the museum, no two things are exactly the same, because no two perspectives are.

"All of the rooms in this house have been converted into stories and installations by artists from the community who are telling different stories about the ordinary, extraordinary colored women in their lives or themselves," Dubois said.

Dubois said the thought of such a museum has been with her since her college days. Since the fall of 2015, the museum (which is also Dubois' home) has sat in it's physical form.

While it's meant for all to enjoy, the different objects encourage visitors to see the world through the lens of a colored girl.

"This is really an opportunity to document and archive our stories in a way that they haven't been archived and documented before," Dubois said.

If you'd like to see the museum for yourself (4613 Newhall St, Philadelphia, PA 19144 in Germantown), you can visit from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays in March, except Easter.
