What's Cooking on 1060: Get Cozy At 'Bar Hygge'

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- North Philadelphia is evolving into a collection of foodie neighborhoods. Now, a new restaurant with an in-house brewery opens in the city's Spring Garden neighborhood.

Bar Hygge is located at 1720 Fairmount Avenue. Co-owner Stew Keener says Hygge is a Danish word that loosely translates to "coziness."

"So we created a space that we think sort of invokes the concept of coziness, intimacy and kind of a relaxed, comfortable vibe."

Keener says they wanted the food to match the atmosphere with its cozy feel.

"So the appetizer thing is kind of these boards you can order, so there are sort of 15 different things that are local or seasonal -- cheese, charcuterie, veggie."

And they brew their own beer in-house:

"Once we get our feet under us, I think that we'll do some Saturday afternoon tours."

Keener says he hopes his restaurant will help bridge the gap between Spring Garden and Fairmount.

"I think that Fairmount Ave, all the way from North Broad up to 25 Street, I think it's going to become a really vibrant, hopefully restaurant destination."

And he says they've taken notice that the neighborhood has been changing as more families are moving in.

"We have a kids' menu and we have high chairs, changing tables in the bathrooms, and since I have a 6-month-old myself, the changing table is in a unisex bathroom."
