Review: Fetty Wap Pleases Sold Out Crowd At The Fillmore Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There's a certain sweetness to Fetty Wap, the "Trap Queen" singer who exploded in 2015 and played a sold out show Thursday night at The Fillmore in Philadelphia.
Vulnerable and tender are not words often associated with rappers who sing about stripper poles and a glock in his Ferrari, but the 24-year-old from Paterson, New Jersey evokes all of that. From the congenital glaucoma that affects his eye, to the motorcycle accident that broke his leg on the day of his debut album's release, right down to the strained lovesick crooning in his songs – it's hard not to root for Fetty Wap.
The Fillmore exploded as the singer slinked across the stage, sparse in set up with just a DJ riser and some on-looking associates. "Thank y'all for praying for me" he told the crowd after discussing his September motorcycle accident.
Fetty Wap shuffled slowly through bangers like "679" and "Jugg", pausing only to sign a couple copies of his self-titled album and hand them out to the crowd as fellow Remy Boyz 1738 rhyme-spitter Monty entertained.
Despite the casual nature of Fetty Wap the show was brisk, clocking in at about 50 minutes – punctuated by a lively rendition of the star-making single "Trap Queen" that showed the rapper more exuberant than he'd been all night. He was heartfelt with fans and friends on stage, all with a heavy dose of chest-rattling bass.
Thank yous and goodbyes were said, and the masses of The Fillmore seemed to collectively take one last selfie to document the night. With that the "zoo" was closed and all left #blessed.
