PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A hashtag is being blamed for the spread of fight videos posted online from a Montgomery County High School this week.

The Abington School District is blaming social media for the spread of altercations in connection with the hashtag #AbingtonFightWeek.

There have been at least five fights that school officials are aware of this week.

Several videos of fights under the hashtag #AbingtonFightWeek have been posted on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

In a letter posted on the district website, Superintendent Dr. Amy Sichel says there is an increased police presence on the high school’s main campus in response to the trending fight posts. District officials did not want to comment beyond the content of that letter.

The school district says it is investigating the fights, and warns that there will be severe consequences for some of those involved.
