Mayor Kenney Endorses State Representative Dwight Evans For U.S. Congress

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mayor Jim Kenney has endorsed State Representative Dwight Evans in the crowded race for the congressional seat currently held by Chakah Fattah.

Mayor Kenney says his endorsement has nothing to do with Congressman Fattah's legal troubles, but is purely a reflection of his faith in Evans and his gratitude for Evans' early support in his mayoral bid.

"I just think he's a very thoughtful well-meaning person, who over the course of his career has been resourceful and productive in his district," Mayor Jim Kenney said.  "There's been great renovation in his district and great energy. And I think he'd do a great job in congress. I know there's been frustration in Harrisburg, with not being able to get a lot done, and I think if he can turn his sights to Washington, he'll be re-energized and bring back the old Dwight that was bringing back resources to the community."

Evans had his own problems with federal investigators, who five years ago looked into a community group he secured funding for, but Kenney dismissed that as dirty politics.

"That was something that was put out there in a very negative and vindictive way," Kenney said. "He's an honest, upright guy and he's never asked me for anything that's been for him personally. It's always been for his constituents."

Kenney plans a formal endorsement on Sunday.
