New Research On Sedentary Behavior

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Interesting research from the University of Pittsburgh. If you don't have a job that allows you to move around during the day, or if you find yourself sitting at home on the computer chatting with friends on Facebook for hours on end, you better get up and get moving.

Sedentary behavior is associated with poor cardiovascular health and diabetes and getting to the gym for that thirty minute workout can help – but it is not enough to make up for all of those hours sitting around.

The researchers actually studied people who were sedentary much of the day and compared them with those who moved around at a reasonable level. They questioned them about working out and compared the results. Not only did they see the disturbing results but found those who were already obese fared much worse. In case you are wondering they defined sedentary behavior as ten minutes or more without walking.
