Police Searching For Hit And Run Driver Who Injured Mother And Two Children

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  The video shows the impact and people running to help a 30-year-old mother and her two children after a hit and run in South Philadelphia Tuesday.

The mom was crossing Dickinson Street at Broad Street just before 1 p.m. when it appears a car allegedly runs a red light and then strikes the family.

"I seen the lady on the ground and little girl over there," Reverend Paul Moore told Eyewitness News.

Moore was in his sanitation truck and saw the alleged driver take off, leaving the mother lying on the ground, unconscious with her 6-month-old strapped onto her in a carrier.

The 5-year-old girl hit the hood and landed feet from her mother.

"The mother was frantic," Moore said. "I got down on my knees. I said, 'God's on your side.'"

He took the 6-month-baby, who was still in her mother's arms, and calmed them until police arrived.

Other witnesses heard the impact, describing hearing a "boom" plus a young girl screaming.

Police are now looking for a female driver of a red Honda Accord.

Video shows the car from several different angles.

It's described as a 1998-2000 model. The passenger side window was left in the street.

Rev. Moore prayed over the family, hoping the driver does the right thing.

"How can you live your life without your conscience getting the best of you? You almost killed three people. You almost took three lives," Moore said.

The mother is currently listed in critical but stable condition at Hahnemann Hospital, where she is being treated for head injuries.

Both children are being treated at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. The 5-year-old suffered a broken femur while the infant suffered scrapes to the head.

According to police, the vehicle is believed to be a red two-door Honda Accord, missing the passenger side mirror frame and may also have damage to the hood.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Accident Investigations District at 215-685-3180 /81 or call 911.
