TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a human fetus has been found in a box that was left outside a Catholic Charities office in New Jersey’s capital city.

Trenton police say workers discovered the fetus at around noon Wednesday. A note was also found in the box, but its contents haven’t been disclosed.

The fetus was taken to the Mercer County medical examiner’s office for further investigation.

The incident is under investigation by city police and the county prosecutor’s office.

A Catholic Charities spokeswoman confirmed that police took away a suspicious package found at their administrative offices. But she said she didn’t know what was inside the box.

Catholic Charities is a national organization that helps serve the poor and other vulnerable people.
