Officials Remind Pet Owners They Could Face Fines For Not Bringing Animals Inside During Extreme Cold

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- While announcing a snow emergency for the city of Philadelphia, officials also took time Friday afternoon to remind pet owners about the dangers snow and extreme cold pose for pets.

Even if you're dog or cat usually spends most of it's time outside and has it's own outdoor shelter, the city of Philadelphia requires pet owners to bring those animals inside during periods of extreme cold.

The city's managing director Mike DiBerardinis says people who don't follow those rules will face penalties.

"Ignoring this could result in a fine up to $500."

DiBerardinis says residents who are concerned about a neighbor's pet can call officials to report it.

"Please call ACCT Philly at 267-385-3800."

ACCT Philly is also offering up free straw bedding for pet owners, which can be picked up at their headquarters on West Hunting Park Avenue between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
