New Study On Vitamin D

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As people age we become particularly concerned about falls. Stretching on a regular basis and strength training can be helpful but what about higher doses of vitamin D?

We know vitamin D helps build strong bones. According to a recent study there was no difference.  Two hundred people ages 70 and older were in the study—some received vitamin D while others either received nothing. The supplements were not more effective in improving lower extremity function, which was the same among all the groups.

High monthly doses of vitamin D may not be warranted in seniors with a prior fall at the very least, people should not think that vitamin D can replace monitored exercise and strength training. The thought of use it or lose it comes into play. For the elderly the best weapon is continuing to stay as strong as possible.
