Officer Injured While Subduing Suspect Who Pulled A Gun

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  A Philadelphia police officer was injured while trying to subdue a suspect who pulled a gun during a traffic stop.

Chief Inspector Scott Small told Eyewitness News it all started at around 7 p.m. in Kensington near the intersection of A and Ontario Streets.

Two officers patrolling the area observed a man in a Honda park illegally near a fire hydrant.

They stopped and questioned the 23-year-old, who began acting suspiciously and then tried to run away.

Inspector Small says the suspect only made it a few feet before officers caught him.

The suspect put up a fight and pulled a gun from his waistband. The officers were able to wrestle the gun away and all three ended up on the ground.

One of the officers broke his ankle in that scuffle.

Small says he was transported to Temple Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The suspect had a loaded semi-automatic gun on him when he was detained.

He faces multiple charges, including carrying a firearm and resisting arrest.
