President Obama Taps VP Biden To Lead Fight Against Cancer

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Vice President Joe Biden announced he will visit the University of Pennsylvania this week as part of his mission to cure cancer.

It is an effort President Barack Obama discussed during his final State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

"Tonight I am announcing a new national effort to get it done, and because he's gone to the mat for all of us on so many issues through the years, I'm putting Joe in charges of Mission Control. For the loved ones we've all lost, for the families we can still save, let's make America the country that cures cancer once and for all."

Biden's son, Beau, who was the former Attorney General of Delaware, died in 2015 of brain cancer.

Biden will meet with physicians and researchers at the Abramson Cancer Center on Friday.

Yesterday, Biden wrote it's not just about finding game-changing treatments, but finding more efficient ways to deliver them to those who need them.
