Windshield Plea For Kidney Could Save Father's Life

SMYRNA, Del. (CBS) --  A search for a kidney donor has proved very creative.

A plea written on a windshield may save one man's life.

For all of the time that William Mills spent repairing bikes and trucks, his own health has been one thing he could not fix.

"You know, I just live for that, and now just can't do it no more," Mills tells Eyewitness News.

Born with only one kidney, it began to fail him six years ago. He is on dialysis four days a week.

"I'm at a point where I'm ready to give up. Then my daughter keeps coming up with these things, you know, and that keeps me going," Mills said.

When William's daughter learned that she couldn't donate one of her own kidneys to her Dad, she came home to help find one.

"I found out I could not give, but I decided to write a message on my car," she said.

It reads: "Looking for someone to donate my dad a Kidney. Type A positive or O blood, please".

It includes a phone number and in parenthesis it says, you only need one.

She wrote this message in August not really expecting anyone would call.

She said since that time, she has reached out to at least 30 people hoping to give their kidney to a stranger.

For now, several of the strangers are undergoing testing to see if they can help, but no official match has yet been made.

Still, the road ahead seems to be more optimistic.

"From my daughter, puppy, my son and my grandson, I wouldn't be here right now," Mills says.
