Toms River Collecting Christmas Trees For Beach Dunes
TOMS RIVER TWP, N.J. – If you're finally ready to let your Christmas tree go, there is one New Jersey town that wants to give it a beachfront retirement.
Toms River Township put out a notice last week, informing residents that they're collecting discarded Christmas trees to plant along the dunes in Ortley Beach.
Christmas trees are great for collecting sand with lots of small branches and thousands of needles.
"The wind will do what it's supposed to do and the sand will collect up around it and in a couple of months you won't even see the trees anymore, it will be a nice addition to our dune," says Lou Amoruso director of public works for Toms River Township.
Immediately following Superstorm Sandy, Island Beach State Park planted hundreds of Christmas trees to build up their dunes.
This is Toms River's first year and the deadline to drop off trees by the 4th Ave lifeguard station is February 1.
