South Jersey Man Faces Murder, Weapons Charges In Christmas Eve Slaying

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A man recently released from prison is now facing murder charges in the Christmas Eve shooting death of another man in southern New Jersey.

Atlantic County prosecutors say 23-year-old Tyrone Hilley also faces weapons and drug charges in the death of 25-year-old Trenton resident Marquis Smith. His bail was set at $1 million, and it wasn't known Saturday if he has retained an attorney.

Smith died shortly after he was found wounded on a street in Hamilton Township.

A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.

Hilley was arrested Friday inside a Philadelphia Village apartment in Egg Harbor City.

Authorities say the Mays Landing man had been freed from provision in November after serving more than two years on charges that included weapon possession, harassment, coercion and burglary.
