Sugar Consumption

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There are all sorts of recommendations to reduce sugar consumption.

One of ten latest recommendations I have seen is to limit added sugars to a maximum of 10 percent of total calories per day. For most adults, that's about 12 teaspoons a day. Others have suggested that sugar drinks be removed from schools and many endorsed a proposed FDA rule that would make the reporting of added sugars on food nutrition labels mandatory.

Sugar is increasingly being blamed for its role in a number of health conditions, and particularly for type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease. But is this enough. Some health experts are recommending taxes a 10 percent soda tax and in Mexico it seems to be working.  This has had little impact on consumption. No doubt there will be many others who come up with ways to try and curb use.
