Philadelphia Releases Its Latest Rankings For District And Charter Schools

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia's latest public school rankings are out.

"Let's congratulate all of our citywide and peer leaders," said Superintendent William Hite.

Speaking at Anne Frank Elementary in Bustleton, Superintendent Hite led a ceremony to honor the 19 Philadelphia schools leading the way in the 2014-15 School Progress Report.  The SPR measures schools on achievement, progress and climate and then places them into one of four tiers.  Hite pointed out that most schools rank in the bottom two.

"Overall, results show that nearly 80 percent of the schools -- both district and charter -- fall into the lowest performance tiers.  That means that we have a lot of work to do," said Hite.

"This report highlights the success but also sets the bar for the need," said Mayor Jim Kenney.

Kenney says the data can be used to show Harrisburg why city schools need more support.
