Neshaminy Community Debates What Really Happened Between Coach And Referee

NESHAMINY, Pa., (CBS) — Neshaminy High School's basketball team took the court away against Pennridge tonight with their assistant coach at the helm.

Head coach Jerry Devine was placed on a leave of absence with the school after a confrontation with a referee a night before left the ref laid out in the floor.

While the school investigates, veteran WBCB sportscaster Vince Reed, broadcasting from court side, says it appears Devine accidentally bumped the ref and did not deliberately "head butt" him or try to knock him down.

But one junior player's dad we spoke to who was at the game says it was a heated moment and it should be about the kids.

Many though, including Nashiminy's students, are standing behind the 43-year-old 10-year veteran coach.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, who's looking into the matter, earlier ruled that the coach must sit out of tonight's game.

Police are also looking into the incident.
