What Is The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force?

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is a group of experts who examine the health needs of the country—virtually every condition from A to Z.

In fact, they have recommendations listed from A to Z. The USPSTF as it is known actually provides an excellent guide for physicians because their information and recommendations are based purely on evidence.

The way they look at it—they will not recommend a test or an intervention unless it is supported by evidence.

It is a very interesting concept –and it can be controversial.

For instance there are certain tests like the PSA test for prostate cancer or various guidelines for mammography  that are based purely on whether or not an intervention or test can help.

The odds are quite good that much often decision making of your physician is guided by this group.
