Grinches Steal Family's Christmas, But Police Help Give It Back

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  A family in the Tacony section of Philadelphia once again has Christmas gifts after police say a couple of thieves broke into their home and stole all of their wrapped gifts.

The family says once they called officers in the 15th district for help, they got much more than they ever expected.

In the aisles of Target in Langhorne, two real-life Santa's helpers.

Brooklyn, Finn and their dad, Officer Walter Bosak are meticulously shopping, but not for themselves.

Their shopping for another family who, after a couple of grinches broke into their home early Tuesday morning, were left with no Christmas gifts.

"The whole house was just completely destroyed, ransacked," James Osuch told Eyewitness News.

"I immediately walked up to all the cops I knew and explained the situation and without hesitation, they reached into their pockets," Officer Bosak, from Philadelphia's 15th District, explained.

And they reached deep. In just one day, District 15 officers raised more than $1,000.

Officer Bosak says he and his partner didn't get the idea until after they made it back to the police station.

He said it was thinking of his own children waking up on Christmas without gifts under the tree that inspired him.

"I couldn't imagine my kids waking up with nothing. I couldn't let it happen and none of my brothers or sisters are going to let it happen," Officer Bosak explained.

So while they didn't come down the chimney, more like through the front door, ditching their sleighs for some squad cars.

Some true examples of the giving spirit this holiday season, some true examples of going above and beyond the call of duty.

"I thought Christmas for them was ruined completely, but these cops, I mean, no one asked them for their help. They just volunteered out of their own kindness and are actually saving christmas for them [the kids]," Osuch said.
