Police Say There Are Big Gaps Between Time Teen Went Missing And When He Was Found Shot To Death In Abandoned Car

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) -- Homicide investigators are trying to fill in some gaps in their probe of the death of an Upper Darby teen who went missing before Thanksgiving and turned up dead inside an abandoned car in North Philadelphia last week.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says the father of 15-year-old Xavier Stern waited nearly three weeks before reporting the teen missing on December 10.

"The father in his report said that the last time that he spoke or knew anything to do with his son was on November 22 when he allegedly cut off his monitor and took off."

He says Stern had been wearing an electronic ankle monitor in connection with a case involving the assault on another teen several months ago.

Chitwood says it was a day later - December 11 - that Philadelphia homicide detectives called him to report Downs was found shot to death in North Philadelphia.

Chitwood says Upper Darby police are cooperating with Philadelphia homicide detectives in the probe.
